Debt Settlement Solutions - Don’t Fall Prey To The Repo Man

Do you have an automotive repossession horror story?  Lots of Americans do.  If you’ve ever tried to hide your car from the repo man, you know that this isn’t the way to go.  The other options are to willingly give up your car, which would cause lots of other problems if you’re not into long-distance hikes, or filing bankruptcy, which causes problems of its own.

If you’re being hunted by the repo man, debt settlement may be a much better option.  You don’t want to give up your car or your credit rating, so let’s look into some options for getting taken care of that will save you and your vehicle.

Sell The Car
One perfectly legitimate way that you can get the repo man off your back is to sell the car.  First, let the lender know that you’re going to do it.  This will usually stop them from trying to grab it.  They know that you’ll be getting money for the car, and this is just as good for them as repo’ing it themselves.  Even if you can’t get the full amount owed on the vehicle, that usually isn’t a problem.  They’ll let you hand that money over to them, and then work out a deal for the rest.

Negotiate With Your Lender
Once they’re trying to nab your car, it’s usually too late for this option, but it still might be worth a try.  If you’ve got bad economic circumstances, there’s a chance they’ll understand and work with you.  It depends on how far behind you are usually, but they may allow you to renegotiate the loan terms so that you can make payments.  They would rather have you simply make payments than have to go through the ordeal of getting the car.

Contact A Debt Settlement Company
Another option that you should consider before you either file for bankruptcy or drive the car out to a desert hide-out is to contact a debt settlement company.  They’ll often have some options for you, depending on the circumstances of your debt.  You can find these companies online and contact them by email.  Explain your situation and see what kinds of ways they can help you.  Don’t pay any fees up front; any good debt settlement company will not ask this.

Bankruptcy is generally considered a last resort, when there’s absolutely nothing else you can do.  It is always good advice to discuss your situation with a local bankruptcy attorney. Bankruptcy and settlement have negative effects on your credit rating, and it can be a major life-changing event.  Try to exhaust all other options before you go this route.  Often our clients see settlement as a nicer option than filing Chapter 7 because they see that an agreement is reached with the creditor which pays them something!
